The Bird and the Mouse

A short story about a bird, a mouse, and the value of helping before asking for help.

One dry season, a small bird lived in a mango tree near an old stone wall. Under the wall lived a mouse who stored seeds in a tiny room. Every morning the bird sang, and every evening the mouse swept dust away from his door.

One day the bird found a long thread caught around her foot. She pulled and pulled, but the thread became tighter. The mouse heard her cry and climbed the wall. With his sharp teeth, he cut the thread until the bird was free. The bird thanked him and flew away.

A week later, rain filled the mouse's doorway with mud. His seeds were trapped inside. The bird remembered his kindness. She carried dry grass, one piece at a time, and helped cover the entrance. The mud stopped sliding in. From then on, the bird sang near the wall, and the mouse left seeds under the tree. They both learned that small help can save a whole home.
