How to Plant a Food Garden on One Acre in Haiti

A one-acre garden can feed a family and sell extra food when water, soil, spacing, and crop choices are planned well.

One acre of land can produce a strong food garden if it is divided with care. First, walk the land after rain and notice where water stays, where soil is dry, and where the sun is strongest. Put compost near the center, keep paths wide enough for wheelbarrows, and protect the edges with living fences such as moringa, pigeon pea, or vetiver.

Plant a mix of fast crops and long crops. Fast crops can include okra, spinach, beans, peppers, eggplant, and herbs. Long crops can include plantain, cassava, sweet potato, corn, papaya, and fruit trees. Use compost, mulch, and crop rotation so the soil does not get tired.

Water planning is the key. A barrel, cistern, drip line, or simple hose can save labor. Grow extra seedlings in a small nursery so empty spaces are replanted quickly. Keep records of what was planted, what sold well, and what failed. A one-acre garden should feed the household first and sell the extra at market.
