Artemis II and the Road to Mars
Artemis II is a Moon mission that helps prepare people for deeper space travel, including future Mars missions.
Artemis II is planned as a crewed mission around the Moon. The goal is not to land. The goal is to test the spacecraft, life support, communication systems, and crew operations far from Earth. When astronauts travel beyond low Earth orbit, every system must work with very little room for error.
This mission matters because the Moon can teach engineers and astronauts how to live and work in deep space. Future missions may build stations near the Moon, land crews on the surface, and test equipment that can later support travel to Mars. Mars is much farther away, so lessons from the Moon are a practical first step.
Artemis II is not a Mars mission by itself. It is part of the road toward Mars. A safe journey to Mars will require better power systems, radiation protection, food planning, landing technology, and long-duration teamwork. Each Moon mission gives NASA and its partners more practice before taking the larger risk.
